There are some pretty exciting things happening at church these days. We had our “official launch” in our new building, which is not a new building at all, but rather a renovated local bar called “The Broken Spoke Saloon”. We went for the jugular with this one, passing out hundreds of pamphlets to the surrounding neighborhoods in the previous week. It turns out that that sort of thing works, because the fire department had to turn people away in the parking lot because we were too full. We went from 120 the previous week to over 250 this week. Now, of all the problems a church can face, this has to rank as one of the best ones to have. Too many people, not enough room. So what are we going to do about it? We’re going to do what every church does–two services. Pending any major drop-off (which is entirely possible), we’re going to have two services on the weekend after this.

I didn’t notice until someone else mentioned it, but the area that Providence has located itself in has a pretty big need for a good church. As I drive around the Little Elm area, I can only spot one or two churches, and they’re different denominations. This is quite a bit different than Abilene, or even many areas in the Plex, where there’s a church at least every square mile.

So I guess I’m pretty pumped abouut all of this. I think we can really make an impact for the Kingdom here, and I’m looking forward to the future. Tonight Katy and I are going to the first of four meetings for the membership class. We were supposed to have listened to some sermon cds beforehand, but we haven’t had the time. I hope there’s not a quiz. How sad would it be to have to drop out of a church membership class because you failed the quiz?

So I’m sure I will have stuff to blog about after going through this membership class. I already know that they take membership more seriously than any church I know. I think they’re concept of a “covenant member” is pretty similar to what others would call a “core-group member”. I know you have to sign a covanant and are required of certain levels of involvement in order to be a member. Like I said, I’m sure I will have plenty of ideas to toss around after going through all of this.
